So farewell then, Theodore "Ted" McCarrick, now gone to that great beach house in the sky (other destinations are possible).
Naturally we have been overwhelmed with tributes to the great man.
A great loss to the rice industry.
DONALD WUERL
When I became Archbishop of Washington in 2006, there was talk of the great spiritual leader who had preceded me,
but I'm afraid that I never met him, and certainly never worked with him. I wonder what became of him?
This picture is probably a forgery.
MARKO RUPNIK
Uncle Ted was a man after my own heart, although his taste was for boys and seminarians, rather than nuns. But let's be
broad-minded! He's a great loss to the sexual abuse community.
"Uncle Ted" by Marko Rupnik.
KEVIN FARRELL
Now that he's dead people are telling all sorts of tales about Uncle Ted, but I can assure you that in
all the time that I shared an apartment building with him there was never any hint of misconduct.
All I remember was that the central heating made odd screaming sounds in the night, and Uncle Ted would
shout "QUIET" at it, but I assumed that he was merely attempting to perform a miracle.
POPE FRANCIS
"This is the complete dossier on McCarrick."
"I'll say I knew nothing."
Who?
This is the spiritual journey of me, Eccles, my big brother Bosco, and my Grate-Anti Moly. Eccles is saved, but we've got real problems with Bosco and Anti.
This is me, Eccles
This is me, Eccles

Answering your Catholic questions
In these turbulent times, leadership of the Catholic Church is not all it should be, and so many people come to this blog for spiritual guidance. Let's go!
Q. Who is Luce? What is Luce? Why is Luce?
A. The year 2025 sees a Jubilee of the Catholic Church. Now, we had a very exciting Jubilee of Mercy in 2015-16, with the
wonderful logo of a 2-headed 3-eyed cyclops on skis designed by Top Catholic Artist Marko Rupnik. This one will be different,
and Luce, designed in the well-known Anime Christi style has been chosen to represent the true essence of the faith.
Of course this is not the first time a woman has had top billing in the Catholic Church. For many years the
Blessed Virgin Mary was an object of veneration and adoration, but she has now fallen out of favour with the Vatican,
perhaps for being too "traditional".
St Joan of Arc - also rejected for being too rigid.
Anyway, if you are a faithful Catholic, you probably already own a crucifix, some rosary beads, quite possibly a scapular.
BUT IF YOU DON'T HAVE A LUCE YOU AIN'T SAVED! Got that?
Q. What is a synod on synodality?
A. Well, nobody really knows. Some say it is like a meeting on meetingality, or a workshop on workshopality.
Perhaps it is more like a congress on congressality, or - like Vatican II - a council on councilality.
Of course, instead of putting a lot of moaning minnies in a room for several weeks, the whole business could
have been settled more cheaply another way (see below):

All roads lead to God
In Singapore, Pope Francis has explained to some children that
all religions are paths to reach God. As a public service, we present some parts of his address that you may have missed:
'Atheism is another way to find God - in the same way as walking east round the world is a way to get to the west. Just because we are Catholics, it doesn't mean we can't be atheists too! Indeed, many of my best friends are atheists - it's the believers I can't stand.
Flat-earthism is a valid faith too, but be careful with that east/west metaphor!
Another religion that will lead you to god is the worship of Rupnik - that brilliant painter whose life and works are
a model to us all. Sit down in a room with a Rupnik picture, and after an hour or two you will be ready for Heaven -
or at least you'll wish to die.
Zaphod Beeblebrox, by Rupnik.
Then who can forget the true faith of Pachamama, the Earth Mother goddess? Austen Ivereigh adores her - I have known
him to sit in a room with a Pachamama idol and, after an hour or two, to scream very loudly. Is he not
imitating the cry of the Mother Earth Goddess? Truly, little Austen is on the path to God!
One path to God - the scenic route.
So, different faiths are like different languages, different dialects.
After all, isn't saying "Allahu Akbar"
or "Slay the Infidels"
just as worthy as "Glory be to the Father" and MUCH better than "Gloria Patri"? Or, for that matter,
Cardinal Rochelieu's favourite prayer, "More Tiramisu, Please", is also a way to find God - or at least, a delicious dessert!'
And yes, Prince Philip worship is genuine.

Vatican welcomes Olympics opening ceremony
Last week's Olympics opening ceremony has been greeted warmly by Vatican staff and their friends. For any readers who were on another planet at the time, the highlight was a re-enactment of the Last Supper, in which a charming young lady called Miss Piggy (memo: check name) played the part of Jesus.
A spiritually nourishing scene.
Said Austen Ivereigh, author of "Pope Francis - the new Messiah?", top synodalist, and part-time kenotic decenterer, "Just as Pachamama was a representation
of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we see the Olympic scene as a faithful representation of the Last Supper, produced by devout Catholics.
My only criticism is that there were no Rupnik murals decorating it."
Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, president of the Pontifical Academy for Lust, said, "Well of course I have to say I'm condemning it, but after all, everyone, absolutely everyone, wants to sit at the table where Jesus gives his life for all and teaches love." Make of that what you will.
Other highlights of the Olympic opening ceremony included a mocking of the martyrdom of Marie Antoinette who -
do we have to keep saying this? - NEVER said "Let them eat cake" (or even "brioches").
For reasons that some of us have never understood, the French like celebrating The Reign of Terror (and they even sing
a disgusting song about filling ditches with blood).
Saint Denis is not amused either.
And what of "Pontifex" Francis himself? Well, his Twitter message was "The authentic Olympic and Paralympic spirit is an antidote against the tragedy of war and a way to put an end to violence. May sport build bridges, break down barriers, and foster peaceful relations."
As Joe Biden puts it, "And they call ME clueless?"
Which brings us to Fr James Martin, who is of course the leading Catholic bridge-builder, and also a sports fan. "Why is there no Ignatian Yoga
event at the Olympics?" he moaned.
"We Jesuits could really clean up here."
And now the punch line...
Finally, Paris produced a worthy opening ceremony, as the Sacré-Coeur Basilica remained illuminated, while the
neighbouring buildings were plunged into darkness. Sometimes, God shows His sense of humour.
LATE NEWS < According to this lookalike, the opening ceremony was intended to be synodal.

How to conduct a trial for schism
This is another in our long-running series on "How to be a good Pope", which
is read regularly by Pope Francis and his likely successors, Cardinals Cupich, Roche
and Fernández (surely, Sarah, Burke and Müller ?) for useful
advice.
In fact, if you think YOU may be the next pope but three, it's probably a good move
to keep up to date with this series.
All good friends, really!
Some time in your papacy you may find someone who disagrees violently with you - even though
you are the Holy Father and infallible in everything you say. Even half-remembered
chats to Scalfari (RIP) and ex-aeroplana pronouncements on long flights are infallible.
As is calling homosexuals "Massimo Faggiolis" (my Italian is not great but I think
this means "Big Beans", which is a well-known term of abuse).
Luckily, the Catholic Church has a remedy for dissidents, an
extrajudicial criminal trial for schism.
"Extrajudicial" is an interesting word. I think it means "sentence first, verdict afterwards",
as the Queen of Hearts (also infallible) says in "Alice in Wonderland". It certainly
doesn't mean a nice public trial, with you and your adversary
- let's call him Archbishop Vinegar, so that nobody will think I'm talking
about a real person - getting into the witness box and being insulted by men in
silly wigs (or whatever the equivalent of the English system is).
"Just answer the question, Mr Francis."
Vinegar's accusations are many and varied. Some of the most hurtful
are that you pull the wings off butterflies and kick lovable fluffy kittens. Good grief,
if a pope can't do that, then who can?
Of course you do have many real skeletons in your cupboard, some of which Vinegar has managed
to find. Others are well-known to any knowledgeable Catholic - your fondness for
protecting unsavoury characters such as that dreadful painter Marko the Ripper, for example.
No chance of his being subject to an extrajudicial criminal trial! He knows too much...
Anyway, after Vinegar's trial, or rather, before it, comes the sentence.
You have checked with your advisers, and we no longer use the rack or the iron maiden -
well, except at the wildest of Cardinal Cocoa's drug orgies - and all you can
really do is excommunicate him. What an anti-climax!
Archbishop Vinegar will not be expecting this either.
Nothing to do with the above (or is it?), but the AI program Copilot kindly produced a picture of the famous Annibale Bugsbunni, to whom we all owe so much. It would be a pity not to use it here. What's up, Holy Father?

The Synod of Comics and the Synod of Despots
As a by-product of the Synod on Synodal Synodality, Pope Francis
is enjoying synods so much that he decided to hold two more.
Getting ready for some kenotic decentering.
First, the Synod of Comics. A bit of a mixed bunch here - Fr James
Martin LGBTSJ made the cut, but Austen Ivereigh didn't. Then
Stephen Colbert, was there, chosen for being Catholic but not too
Catholic, and certainly not too funny.
Colbert likes to needle people.
Also Whoopi Goldberg is about as anti-Catholic as they come.
But she will be walking with the rest (or perhaps waddling), all the while looking for a new way of being Church.
Oh, that's enough, let's move on to the synod of despots.
"Could you jump-start my brain, please? The battery's flat."
All the great world leaders - by which we mean acolytes of Soros, Schwab and Gates etc. - will be
attending the synod of despots. Well not all - you would expect to see despots such as Arthur Roche and
Victor Fernández attending, but Uncle Arthur dropped out when he was told there would be no cake,
while Tucho was told he would not be allowed to kiss anyone, not even Ursula von der Leyen.
"How nice to meet someone who's even more unpopular than I am!"
Of course, Pope Francis will be at both synods. His own Amoris Laetitia is packed with jokes
as funny as anything Colbert ever said, while his despotic skills have never been questioned.
Well, that will take people's attention away from Rupnik, won't it?

Compromise found in the Rupnik case
Fr Marko Rupnik, you will recall, is accused of a variety of sexual offences, including rape, some
of them so disgusting that even Cardinal Fernández has said "I couldn't have used these
ideas
in any of my pornographic books - nobody would have believed them."
However he is a GOOD FRIEND of Pope Francis, and must not under any circumstances be
laicised, burnt at the stake, or otherwise inconvenienced. And even his dreadful "artwork"
is still on prominent display in the Vatican, the Ivereigh Towers Art Gallery, etc. etc.
Luckily, Dr "Expert" Ivereigh has come up with a compromise solution.
"These works raise our minds and hearts to God, so the answer is..."
"... QR codes!"
Yes, from now on, we keep the Rupnik daubs in prominent places, adding a little QR code which
conveys the message: "By the way, some Puritan heretics don't like what Rupnik has done, but who are we to judge?"
Rupnik himself has agreed to wear a little lapel badge carrying a QR code (but we don't recommend any
ladies to get close enough to scan him), and Ivereigh Towers also has a little QR code on the door
warning people about what they may find inside.
Cardinal Napier - another Rupnik fan - has agreed to have the QR code sewn into his mitre, as a gesture of solidarity
with the "Don't let's be beastly to Marco" campaign.
The Rupnik QR code - note the traditional merging of two eyes.
As a result of these new ideas, it is possible that the sacrament of Confession
will also be modified in the near future, and that people will be allowed to create QR codes linking to a
description of their sins, which can
be scanned by the priest - surely this is less embarrassing all round?

Pope Francis's autobiography 2 - our hero starts work
Our serialization of the book continues from Part 1.
Me with my troublesome predecessor!
The Year of Mercy
Quite early in my reign I decided to institute a Jubilee Year of Mercy. As well as being very humble, I am also a particularly merciful man
- except to people I don't like -
so I initially proposed a slogan "Be merciful like the Holy Father!" However, owing to
a clerical error (the cleric in question has now been mercifully laicised), it came out as
"Merciful like the Father", which isn't at all the same thing!
My great friend Marko Rupnik was in Rome, and so I asked him
whether he could provide one of his artistic masterpieces as a logo. "The most appropriate thing would be
a two-headed skiing instructor with three eyes," he said, "just as soon as I finish
some work I have to do with my 'Nuns in Bondage'." The NIB wasn't an order I had ever come across, but
I was pleased to know that Marko was reaching out to these ladies.
An artistic masterpiece!
Amoris Laetitia.
One of my early triumphs was the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, which followed two Synods
on the Family. In those days I hadn't yet got hold of the best way to run a synod, namely,
to invite trouble-makers to chatter to each other, flatter them by calling them experts,
and then ignore everything they say!
A few weeks before the report was due, I received a letter from Adolfo Nicolás, who was then
head of the Jesuits, saying "Holy Father, your recent documents have been too easy for
people to understand. Please insert some ambiguity, heresy and confusion into the next one,
or we may have to review your membership of the Jesuits."
I think I did rather well. The result was that four turbulent cardinals sent me five Dubia.
These were questions such as
"Are you off your head?" and "What do you think you are playing at?" and they were very difficult to answer!
So I ignored them completely, but made a note that a bit of Merciful Persecution would
be needed.
Luckily, two of the cardinals died quite quickly, and one was very old. This just left my ARCH-ENEMY,
Raymond Burke! I gradually took my revenge, so that now, at the time of writing, he is
penniless, homeless, and under order to walk around ringing a bell and shouting "UNSAVED! UNSAVED!"
Here I have him in a painful grip known as the "Chinese Burn".
Pachamama
One of my great triumphs as pope has been to welcome other religions into the "big tent".
Muslims, Hindus, Aztecs, Fire-worshippers, Pagans - even Anglicans - they're all just following slight variations on
Catholicism. So when the time came to welcome the Amazonian indigenous groups, we
bought a job lot of Pachamama idols and showed reverence to them.
My dear friend Austen Ivereigh, who has already written six seven books about
me, including "The Pope Francis keep-fit book" and "Pope Francis's insect-based recipes",
told me that Pachamama was actually just a name used by the Blessed Virgin Mary: this sounded
a bit TOO Catholic for me, but I let it pass.
Then what happened? Newspaper headlines worldwide!
POPE'S IDOLS NOW IN SANTA MARIA CHURCH.
FRANCIS IDOLS THROWN IN TIBER
POPE APOLOGISES TO PACHAMAMA FOR EARLY BATH
What nonsense! As if I would ever apologise to anyone, even an Amazonian fertility goddess!
Just a perfectly ordinary day in the Vatican.
You may be wondering where the sex idols are now. Well, I passed them
onto my great friends Marko
and Tucho. They were delighted!
Part 3
is the last part. Honest.

Tucho embarks on a book-signing
Cardinal "Tucho" Fernàndez, Head of the Vatican Dicastery for Naughty Things,
is now embarking on a tour of Rome's bookshops, signing copies of the reprinted version of
his hard-porn best-seller "Mystical Passion", which, he explains, he wrote as a "clarification"
of his previous soft-porn book, "Kiss me, Cheeky!"
For those wishing to obtain signed copies of the learned treatise, described
by Mike Lewis of Where Pacha Is as "A little intellectual for me, but otherwise fine",
Tucho will be at "Dirty Books 'R' us" at 9 a.m., the "Porno Emporium" at
10, and the Vatican Library at 11.
One satisfied customer (until the Pope changes his mind).
Meanwhile, we have had no comments from Pope Teflon,
so it seems that he is still entirely happy to see Tucho directing the doctrine of the
Catholic Church. There are others equally qualified to take over Tucho's job, such as Pope Teflon's
good friends Marko Rupnik and Gustavo
Zanchetta, but it seems that they may miss out this time.
"The buck never reached me, so how can it stop here?"
Addendum: no comments yet from Lamb, Ivereigh, etc. as far as I know. But they probably need to read the book thoroughly
- say half-a-dozen times - before commenting.

The World Cup of Synod Jargon
The only way to understand the purpose of this Synod on Synodality is to see
how people have described it. Accordingly we shall hold a World Cup of Synod Jargon,
starting on Monday 30th October (using Twitter/X polls once more).
Synodal experts!
So far the runners and riders are as follows. I will accept more authentic nominations
if they are genuine quotations from synodists, and I am adding new ones to the list as they are received.

Marko Rupnik to participate in the Great Synod
In an unusual exercise of papal authority, Pope Francis has appointed the distinguished artist
Fr Marko Rupnik (sometimes referred to as "Master of the Pope's Art", "The Artist Laureate", and
"My Pal Marko who does those weird paintings") to the Secret Synod on Synodality.
From the Synod web page. Unusually, for a Rupnik, every person here has exactly two eyes.
Rupnik has of course been much in the news for his highly original activities, unsuitable
for listing on a family blog that is read by nuns, children and Cardinal "TouchMe" Fernández.
But since the Pope has also appointed Messrs. Zanchetta, Grassi, Barros and McCarrick to the distinguished
membership of the synod, there is no danger of Maestro Marko feeling lonely.
It has coincidentally also been decided that the synod will be held behind
closed doors, with just the occasional news bulletin to tell us what has
been decided. Will it be lesbian priests? Transgender bishops (in addition to the ones we have already)?
A banning of the Vernacular Mass to match the banning of the Latin Mass? Place your bets now.
We shall not see much of what is going on at the synod.
Some critics are unhappy with the favour shown to Marko Rupnik, but the great man is sure to offer the Church many new insights on sexual relations. Anyway, in the words of the "Where Pacha Is" blog
- Pope Francis is always right, even when he's wrong.
In fact, it's thought that Pope Francis, having tormented the faithful with Amoris Laetitia, Traditionis Custodes,
and much else, is running out of ways to stamp his personality on the Catholic Church, and this was
the best he could do.
Well, the ground's in tip-top condition, and we can look forward to some first-rate
synodal sport in the next few weeks. Let's finish off with one of my favourite paintings
(from the Rupnik exhibition currently being held in the Ivereigh Gallery, Little-Scribbler-on-the-Moan).
The drunken custard-pie addict and his optically-challenged friends are back!

The synod of bishops will welcome (nearly) everyone
It's the day the whole Catholic Church has been waiting for: the Instrumentum Laboris
for the forthcoming Synod of Synodal Bishops on Synodality (sponsored by Bud Light) is released.
This is the result of lengthy discussions
and the use of sophisticated AI (so NOT Austen Ivereigh), and the
common theme is ALL ARE WELCOME.
As Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich points out, we need to welcome persistent adulterers, LGBTQSJ+- people,
and even the bigamists! They may receive communion - indeed, why not let them act
as Extraordinary Monsters of Holy Communion?
The Hell Choir (anag., 9 letters) is singing!
We must also welcome female deacons, and this includes transgender deacons and those who self-identify as
cats. Give them a friendly stroke (the cats, that is) and a saucer of milk! Welcome any dead mice they
have brought in to Mass!
But this is only half the story. Following representations from Pope Francis's best mates,
we shall now be pleased to encourage:
* Abortionists, * Child abusers, * Rapists, * Embezzlers, and of course * Idol-worshippers.I think this includes most of Francis's bosom pals. Hi, Emma, Marko, Gustavo, Giovanni, and the Pachamama club! From the Austen Ivereigh Art Collection: we welcome the drunk addicted to custard pies! Of course there are some classes of people that cannot POSSIBLY be welcomed. Anyone who wants to celebrate the traditional Latin Mass... anyone who asks embarrassing questions about Amoris Laetitia (bye, bye, Burke!)... all indietrists, backwardists, self-absorbed Promethean neo-Pelagians, faithful Catholics, ... I hope the bishops have got the message now. Late news. There is one category of Francis mates that we forgot to mention. And, for once, there is a Biblical justification to it, since Christ told us to feed the hungry. Yes, here we are! We welcome the gluttons!

2013 and all that (part 2)
Continued from Part 1.
The story so far: Pope Francis the humble has been in the chair of St Peter for two years,
and he is just getting started.
Francis was now tiring of religious teaching, and so he turned his attention to the environment
instead. It was time for a papal encyclopaedia, which he called Loudhailer Si' because he
went around shouting about it. He had realised that many Catholics were going to end up in a hot place
if they did not mend their ways - possibly at the North Pole, where there were now no penguins at all.
"Next time, we're all going by bicycle."
Francis was very keen on sinners, and so he organized a Second Sinner of the Family, which, like the first one,
was instructed to think of new sins that could be tried out. We shall tell of the results later.
However, Francis had not forgotten the faithful Catholics who still believed in the Bible, and
so he encouraged them with new cries of "rigid!" This was a Good Thing.
At the end of the year, there was a great celebration of Creation, and pictures of baboons and
toads were projected onto the walls of St Peter's in Rome. At first, people assumed that
they were images of Cardigan Marxist, Cardigan Dandruff, and similar Eminems (as cardigans are called).
In the end, it was realised that they were simply creatures to be venerated, similar to the "rigid" saints
that had previously been respected.
Which cardigan is this?
It was also the start of the Year of Murky, in which murkiness was to be celebrated
throughout the Catholic world. Churches were asked to have special "Doors of Murky" by which the
faithful could enter to show their devotion to murky. If no such door was available, the
faithful were encouraged to climb in through a Window of Murky, or down a Chimney of Murky.
These were called spiritual exercises.
The two-headed cyclops logo, designed by Marko Rupnik SJ, a great Catholic hero.
But it was not long before the Church forgot about being Murky, as after the Sinner of the Family
Pope Francis released
his magnum opus, which he called Amorous Letitia, in honour of a girl he had known in Argentina in the
days before he became a priest. Latin scholars tell us that it also means "The Joy of Sex".
Not all Catholics understood Amorous Letitia. The bits where families were encouraged to spend time
together, washing the cats, talking to the goldfish, or kissing the car goodnight, were clear enough, but
there were doubts about whether adultery was now encouraged, and whether divorce was the answer if the wife
snored.
The Spirit of Amorous Letitia.
So four cardigans bravely wrote to the pope asking if he could clarify Catholic teaching for them.
To a Jesuit, being asked to clarify *anything* is a mortal insult, and in a spirit of Murky,
Francis pretended that the letter (known as the five "Do-be-clears") had been lost in the post.
So we shall never know whether adultery is a sin, especially since two of the Do-be-clear cardigans
died soon after impertinently asking for guidance.
In the next part, Pope Francis appoints some strange new cardigans,
cuts a deal with President Xi-who-must-be-obeyed, and
takes up the worship of
Pachanonsense.

How to get rid of a turbulent priest
Probably several of my readers will one day become pope (Hi, Blase! Hi, Arthur! Hi, Tina!) and will need
me to advise them on how to behave. Today's topic is the vexed one of getting rid of a priest
you don't like. These days, popes don't often poison priests - in fact Francis has been a model non-poisoner -
and the most common solution is simple laicisation. But of course we don't laicise
everyone who offends.
For example, Cardinal Cocaine, who wears a lampshade on his head and
knows all about "gay" orgies can't really be said to be a problem!
Not a problem.
Likewise, Father Jimbo SJ, who can't take a cup of tea without relating it to LGBT issues, and whose Biblical teaching is best described as "imaginative",
is to be welcomed into the Vatican and asked for his advice!
Then there's Archbishop Paggles,
who stars in homoerotic murals, doesn't really understand what a Pontifical Academy for Not Bumping People off is supposed to do, and seems to be in all sorts of other troubles. He's safe.
Even Fr Rumpy, who won a prize for the worst ecclesial art ever seen, who has trouble keeping his vestments on,
and who solves his problems by
absolving the people he has sinned with, only gets a brief slap on the wrist from the CDF.
Rumpy's masterpiece - a drunken man surrounded by custard pies.
But what's the point of being pope if you can't sack a few people?
Aha! I have it! There's this Pavanne chap of "Priests Against Murder", who
is admittedly rather eccentric in his methods. Worst of all he is very very very pro-life!
Emma Bonehead isn't at all happy! Mariana Mozzarella has complained!
Sack him! But do it in a Jesuit way - i.e., don't say exactly why you're sacking him.
Mutter something about blasphemous communications (Uncle Wilt has explained to you that backing Donald Trump
is a hideous blasphemy) and accuse him of disobeying his bishop (a catch-all, as sometimes you have to choose between
God and your bishop).
Public Enemy Number One.
You are, of course, a merciful pope (as well as a humble one), so you won't be sending the Swiss Guard round to do a Thomas Becket on him. Well, not this week. Thank Heavens that the art of removing turbulent priests has evolved since the days of Henry II, and you can simply cast him into outer darkness!
