I'm using this post to record the results of the final rounds of the
World Cup of Great Catholic leaders. Many well-known "leaders" have fallen by the wayside, including Pope Francis, Cardinals
Fernández
and Roche,
and those invited to President Biden's party for Catholic leaders, such as Fr James Martin SJ
and Fr Thomas Reese SJ. But there is plenty of talent left in the competition.

The God Bless Eccles Bible
Donald Trump has sent out the message, Happy Holy Week! Let's Make America Pray Again. As we lead into Good Friday and Easter, I encourage you to get a copy of the God Bless The USA Bible.
The author (no, not really).
I supposed at firat that this would be a Bible written by Mr Trump, in which case it
would have the following features:
All in capitals. Silly made-up names for people he doesn't like (I would never do that, would I?) All the disciples wearing red hats. God referred to as "Donald". "Make Heaven Great Again" the main message of the Gospels. But, I admit that I was wrong. It is simply a King James Bible with a few add-ons. After all, the new Pope Francis Bible includes extra books - the books of Laudato Si', Amoris Laetitia, Traditionis Custodes, and Fiducia Supplicans - and I can't imagine anyone objecting to that! "Not only did he sack me, but he gave me a copy of his book." What Donald actually adds are things such as the US Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence. Mere Britons may wonder why the US Constitution is so sacred that it keeps getting amended, but again I refer to Pope Francis's treatment of the Gospel... Uncle Joe is working on a God Bless Biden Bible, with innovations like the Ten Commandments being deleted, and the inclusion of extra documents, such as advertisements for Planned Parenthood and Graeter's chocolate chip ice-cream. Recommended to all DEVOUT Catholics! So finally, we come to the God Bless Eccles Bible. Only $50, so it should outsell the God Bless The USA Bible (which costs $60). With the popular advertising slogans Make Eccles Rich Again and Become Saved By Reading This Book! this is a Douai–Rheims Bible with some of my most popular blog posts (more than 3 readers!) added as bonus chapters to be read out at Mass. These include
Why the Pope is right about everything; How to preach a royal wedding sermon; The toxic tradition of the Latin Mass; The World Cup of Bad Hymns; and Is Pope Francis a Trad?So I'll stop there, as I have to do a few Bible-signing sessions today - Westminster Cathedral, Waterstones, etc.

Pope Francis's autobiography 2 - our hero starts work
Our serialization of the book continues from Part 1.
Me with my troublesome predecessor!
The Year of Mercy
Quite early in my reign I decided to institute a Jubilee Year of Mercy. As well as being very humble, I am also a particularly merciful man
- except to people I don't like -
so I initially proposed a slogan "Be merciful like the Holy Father!" However, owing to
a clerical error (the cleric in question has now been mercifully laicised), it came out as
"Merciful like the Father", which isn't at all the same thing!
My great friend Marko Rupnik was in Rome, and so I asked him
whether he could provide one of his artistic masterpieces as a logo. "The most appropriate thing would be
a two-headed skiing instructor with three eyes," he said, "just as soon as I finish
some work I have to do with my 'Nuns in Bondage'." The NIB wasn't an order I had ever come across, but
I was pleased to know that Marko was reaching out to these ladies.
An artistic masterpiece!
Amoris Laetitia.
One of my early triumphs was the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, which followed two Synods
on the Family. In those days I hadn't yet got hold of the best way to run a synod, namely,
to invite trouble-makers to chatter to each other, flatter them by calling them experts,
and then ignore everything they say!
A few weeks before the report was due, I received a letter from Adolfo Nicolás, who was then
head of the Jesuits, saying "Holy Father, your recent documents have been too easy for
people to understand. Please insert some ambiguity, heresy and confusion into the next one,
or we may have to review your membership of the Jesuits."
I think I did rather well. The result was that four turbulent cardinals sent me five Dubia.
These were questions such as
"Are you off your head?" and "What do you think you are playing at?" and they were very difficult to answer!
So I ignored them completely, but made a note that a bit of Merciful Persecution would
be needed.
Luckily, two of the cardinals died quite quickly, and one was very old. This just left my ARCH-ENEMY,
Raymond Burke! I gradually took my revenge, so that now, at the time of writing, he is
penniless, homeless, and under order to walk around ringing a bell and shouting "UNSAVED! UNSAVED!"
Here I have him in a painful grip known as the "Chinese Burn".
Pachamama
One of my great triumphs as pope has been to welcome other religions into the "big tent".
Muslims, Hindus, Aztecs, Fire-worshippers, Pagans - even Anglicans - they're all just following slight variations on
Catholicism. So when the time came to welcome the Amazonian indigenous groups, we
bought a job lot of Pachamama idols and showed reverence to them.
My dear friend Austen Ivereigh, who has already written six seven books about
me, including "The Pope Francis keep-fit book" and "Pope Francis's insect-based recipes",
told me that Pachamama was actually just a name used by the Blessed Virgin Mary: this sounded
a bit TOO Catholic for me, but I let it pass.
Then what happened? Newspaper headlines worldwide!
POPE'S IDOLS NOW IN SANTA MARIA CHURCH.
FRANCIS IDOLS THROWN IN TIBER
POPE APOLOGISES TO PACHAMAMA FOR EARLY BATH
What nonsense! As if I would ever apologise to anyone, even an Amazonian fertility goddess!
Just a perfectly ordinary day in the Vatican.
You may be wondering where the sex idols are now. Well, I passed them
onto my great friends Marko
and Tucho. They were delighted!
Part 3
is the last part. Honest.

Vincent Nichols cancels Triduum
Catholics in the diocese of Westminster have been surprised to learn
from Cardinal Nichols that
this year the Triduum is completely cancelled, and they will move
immediately from Thursday afternoon (after Cardinal Nichols has completed
the ceremonial washing of the feet
of women, Muslims, dogs and cats) to the traditional Sunday evening
worship of rabbits and eggs, as performed by the Church since the
first century.
However, three new activities are to replace the triduum, as follows:
1. All praise to Little Amal!
Another opportunity to worship Little Amal, the symbol of migration (or was it climate change? I forget).
And if you don't, then she will send her mother, Big Amal, to beat you up!
2. The religion of football.
Football (soccer) is already one of the main obsessions of the UK, and it is time that
the Catholic Church forgot about all that passiontide stuff and celebrated a religion
said to have been founded by the disciples. It is no coincidence that there were
exactly 11 of them left after Judas Iscariot was, er, transferred.
3. This would be an ecumenical matter.
It is no coincidence that March is Black Transgender Sikh History Awareness Month, and
we must always be open to alternative forms of worship, provided that they are not
in Latin!
Definitely no TLM!
On reaching the age of 75, Cardinal Nichols tendered his resignation to the Pope, as he was obliged to.
However, the Pope is not obliged to accept the resignations of yes-men: trouble-makers are
another matter, of course, and they are instantly cast into the outer darkness without a home,
a job, or a pension. We have all seen DO NOT FEED THE BURKE signs on the walls of the Vatican.
However, Vin is safe for the time being (and so are we, if they are really thinking of John Arnold
as a successor).
"Ugh! Heresy! Take it away!"

Burkegate - What Pope Francis really said
A special article by Austen "Spindoctor" Ivereigh for the
Where Pachamama is blog.
The Pope is an astonishly patient man, and will sink his enemies even if it takes him ten years to do it.
Seeing all the bad publicity he was getting for
his merciful and patient attacks on Cardinal Burke, he summoned me to Rome as a matter
of urgency so that I could explain to the world what he was up to. Did I mention that I am an expert
on papal matters?
I flew to Rome from Bristol airport, stopping on the way at the Multifaith Bus Shelter for
a spot of Pachamama devotion, also in order to pin up a mural by my favourite artist
Marko Rupnik. The place was deserted apart from an Incan sacrifice taking place
at the same time.
A sacred place!
Patient merciful Pope Francis the Humble was not in good health - a sprained wrist through slapping too many Chinese girls -
but he explained to me that he loved Cardinal
Burke - after all, we are commanded to love our enemies, and Burke was one of
his worst enemies. With their Dubia, Burke and his fellow-conspirators had asked Pope Francis to explain some
aspects of Amoris Laetitia
several years ago, knowing perfectly well that clear and unambiguous
teaching is against the rules of the Jesuit order.
Burke had also dared to criticise the Synod on Synodal Synodality of Synodhood,
arguably the most important Catholic event since Pentecost, saying that it
was a complete waste of time. Having myself attended as an expert, I know
that getting barmy old ladies sitting round tables and moaning is the true future of the Church!
We must all be Synod!
At this point in our discussion, Francis found his patience
tried beyond all limits, and he humbly kicked Rupnik, the Vatican cat, through the window.
"Don't worry," he said. "Pick up the body and give it to Mike Lewis. He'll eat anything."
Instead of living in a broom cupboard, as the humble Holy Father does, Cardinal
Burke has a much larger apartment, and this is now required by other cardinals
who wish to hold "get-togethers" there. I know that Cardinal Coccopalmerio
has already put in a bid.
Who is this shadowy figure?
Of course Burke is still a member of two dicasteries, and of the Apostolic Signatura,
but as Pope Francis explained, he should regard these positions as honours, and not expect to
be paid.
So what message am I to take away from my meeting with the Humble Father? First,
although in our conversation he described Burke as his enemy, he has now sent me
a note saying "I never used the word 'enemy' nor the pronoun 'my'." Obviously
we all misheard - it's easily done. Also he certainly never said "We hates him we hates him,
nasty Burkies, we hates him, my precious, and we is going to throw him
out on the streets!"
I hope I have made it clear, and let me repeat this: Pope Francis is patient, kind and
merciful, and Cardinal Burke is a meanie. Strickland has fallen! Burke has fallen!
Who will be next? Aha!
Great stuff, Austen. And the cat pie was delicious! Mike.
Mike Lewis!

The synod of bishops will welcome (nearly) everyone
It's the day the whole Catholic Church has been waiting for: the Instrumentum Laboris
for the forthcoming Synod of Synodal Bishops on Synodality (sponsored by Bud Light) is released.
This is the result of lengthy discussions
and the use of sophisticated AI (so NOT Austen Ivereigh), and the
common theme is ALL ARE WELCOME.
As Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich points out, we need to welcome persistent adulterers, LGBTQSJ+- people,
and even the bigamists! They may receive communion - indeed, why not let them act
as Extraordinary Monsters of Holy Communion?
The Hell Choir (anag., 9 letters) is singing!
We must also welcome female deacons, and this includes transgender deacons and those who self-identify as
cats. Give them a friendly stroke (the cats, that is) and a saucer of milk! Welcome any dead mice they
have brought in to Mass!
But this is only half the story. Following representations from Pope Francis's best mates,
we shall now be pleased to encourage:
* Abortionists, * Child abusers, * Rapists, * Embezzlers, and of course * Idol-worshippers.I think this includes most of Francis's bosom pals. Hi, Emma, Marko, Gustavo, Giovanni, and the Pachamama club! From the Austen Ivereigh Art Collection: we welcome the drunk addicted to custard pies! Of course there are some classes of people that cannot POSSIBLY be welcomed. Anyone who wants to celebrate the traditional Latin Mass... anyone who asks embarrassing questions about Amoris Laetitia (bye, bye, Burke!)... all indietrists, backwardists, self-absorbed Promethean neo-Pelagians, faithful Catholics, ... I hope the bishops have got the message now. Late news. There is one category of Francis mates that we forgot to mention. And, for once, there is a Biblical justification to it, since Christ told us to feed the hungry. Yes, here we are! We welcome the gluttons!

Elon Musk offers to buy the Catholic Church
Elon Musk, said to be the richest man in the world after Cardinal Becciu, has made a bid of $666 billion for the
Catholic Church (hereafter abbreviated to Cather). In a letter to Pope Francis, Chairman of the Church since a 2013 boardroom coup, Musk said that the
business was not thriving under its
current management, and that changes were needed.
The new owner.
This is not the first time that Cather has faced hostile takeover bids: in the 16th century the
entrepreneur Henry Tudor made an extremely savage takeover of its English business, "cancelling" many
users. Similarly, the tycoon Martin Luther attempted to force the German branch of the Church out of business by setting up a rival
platform. But this is apparently the first time that a bid has been made for the whole Church.
If Musk is successful, he is expected to sack the unpopular Chairman Francis, and install himself as boss, taking the title
Pope Elon I.
"Takover or invasion, which do you want?"
What other changes are we likely to see?
I'm glad you asked me that. We are likely to see the return of several people who were effectively silenced by
the antisocial medium - for example the notorious American Raymond Burke with his aggressive statements such as
WE WONDER IF YOU WOULD BE SO KIND AS TO ANSWER A FEW DUBIA FOR US, HOLY FATHER? and many people who have
infringed "Community Standards" by praising the Traditional Latin Mass.
The new Musk-run Cather is unlikely to waste any time on synods, and all the pressure groups that have
so far exploited Cather to conduct such activities, such as the German Heretic Synod, the Deranged Feminist Synod, and the Jesuit LGBTSJ Synod,
will be in breach of Cather rules.
We live in interesting times. Possibly.

How to receive papal guests
Yes, it's another one in our series "How to be a good pope", containing top tips for those readers
who may end up with the big job without having a clue how to do it. There are no training courses
available, not even Youtube videos, so future popes tend to come here for advice.
As a pope you will naturally receive visitors wishing to benefit from your wisdom, to give
you a piece of their mind, or simply to get a bit of free publicity (thinking of you, Austen,
Greta, Fr Jimbo...) Let's have a few case studies.
Tip 1: Do not scream "heretic" and call for the Inquisition.
The Anglican bishop of Norwich, Graham Usher, drops in, bearing sumptuous gifts, namely a jar of honey (formerly the property
of Richard Dawkins) and a bee facemask (no, this is not something to protect bees from Covid-19). Now, this is the bishop in whose cathedral there was a helter-skelter
two years ago and a plastic dinosaur skeleton this year. What can his Lordship possibly want? Is he going to advise
you to set up a helter-skelter in the Sistine Chapel, or a dinosaur skeleton in St Peter's Basilica (a nasty jibe against the
priests who used to be allowed to offer Masses there)? Or is it simply that he expects you to
liven up the tombs of the saints by surrounding them with beehives?
Have a quick photo opportunity, and send him packing. Keep the honey, though, and wear the mask at your next papal audience
to frighten the pilgrims.
Tip 1 (bis): Do not scream "heretic" and call for the Inquisition.
The Wicked Witch of the West is your next visitor. Another one seeking a photo opportunity, and perhaps a papal endorsement of
her activities. You instantly find common ground with her - you both hate the Big Bad Orange Man - and you get on like a house on fire.
Unfortunately you can't accede to her wishes that you donate a few million dollars to Planned Parenthood - Vatican finances
are a bit rocky at the moment - but she has your blessing.
You hear later that she attended a Mass in Rome and was booed out. Well, that's been happening to you quite a lot recently,
especially since you declared war on the entire pre-1960s Catholic Church - so you can sympathise.
And now some visitors you definitely don't want to welcome.
Tip 2: Set the papal poodles (Antonio and Austen) on unwanted guests..
Cardinal Tao has arrived all the way from China, and wants an audience with you. There is absolutely nothing in this for you - no photo opportunity,
just a 30-minute lecture on why it is a bad idea to let a totalitarian dictatorship run the Catholic Church in China.
Pretend you're out. Pretend you're ill. Don't bother to pretend, just lock the doors.
Tip 2 (bis): Set the papal poodles (Antonio and Austen) on unwanted guests..
Finally, one of those irritating Dubia cardinals is still trying to get in to see you. It's been nearly five years
since four of them wrote a letter asking you to clarify Catholic teaching by answering five simple Yes/No
questions. As a Jesuit, clarifying teaching would be unprecedented behaviour, and make you very unpopular with the Superior, Arturo Sausage.
Clear off, Ray.
Which reminds me...
According to Wikipedia, the gentleman above is called a Dubia Roach. The name may remind you
that there's a great fan of yours at the Congregation for Divine Worship who is looking for a red hat in an extra large fitting.
Indeed, he recently said "the post-Vatican II missal of Paul VI is the 'richest' the Church has ever produced." Come on, invite
him round for tea (order lots of cinnabons) and give him what he wants!

Traditionalist Gaslighting
A special guest posting from Mike Lewis and Stephen Ferry, which originally
appeared on the ultramontanist website Where Pacha is.
hates their guts finds it difficult to accommodate them.
Does Vatican II mean nothing to them? Did she die in vain?
Pope Francis has said that EWTN is the work of the Devil. Pope Francis is always right. We can also reveal that the Devil
is an extremist. Need we say more? Yes, this is just the first in a 94-part series...
In his wonderful motu proprio Trads Cussed, Francis, the greatest pope who ever lived, points out that all those who celebrate the traditional mass are extremists, fascists, and altogether not good Catholics like he is, along with his friends, Blase Cupich, James Martin SJ and Joe Biden. HE IS RIGHT. Mike Lewis (nobody has heard of Stephen Ferry: he may be a sockpuppet). Lots of extremists have contested the Very Holy Father's claims. We mention Raymond Burke, who, to the great disappointment of Pope Francis, seems to be recovering from the deadly virus Vatic-2. Burke wrote a piece in which he said "Well, actually, TLM worshippers are not schismatics at all." Regular readers of Where Pacha is (both of them) will remember that Burke was one of the four Dubia cardinals who nearly caused the greatest schism in the Church's history by asking Pope Francis to clarify something he said! As papal biographer Austen Ivereigh Tower, author of "Pope Francis - the great redeemer", "Go away Austen, I'm trying to sleep" and the new best-seller based on Archpope Francis's teachings, "Forget the past - they're all dead people", puts it, "For many bishops the call to wake up and think about Catholicism was the last straw!" "If anyone calle me schismatic again, I'll go and found my own Church!" There are lots of very evil people out there. Dr Joseph Shaw, chairman of the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales, and contributor to such scurrilous publications as Extremist weekly and Schismatic News, may be an intellectual giant, but is obviously not in the same league as our friend Austen Ivermectin - how many hagiographies of St Pope Francis has Shaw written? This devotee of the Extremist Form Mass has publicly denied the divinity of Pachamama (even though she's a LATIN American goddess). He also endorsed those dreadful Dubia cardinals who insisted on trying to square Supreme Pope Francis's teachings with those of dead people such as Pope Benedict XVI (oh, isn't he?), St Paul and St Peter. We discard him utterly. Pachapapa Francis has pinpointed the centre of all evil - the Extremist World Television Network EWTN. It was founded by extremist Mother Angelica; her friend Raymond Arroyo plays an influential role with his extremist programme The World Over Live, which devotes all its time to reporting on the tantrums of Pope Francis the Humble. Last week they even invited the blood-crazed ferret, Damian Thompson of the fascist Spectator magazine to say rude things about Francis, the Fourth Person of the Trinity. Enough said! I think I've made my point. The opponents of Trads Cussed are possessed, diabolical, schismatic, extremist (have I used that word already?) and possessed by diabolically schismatic extremism! No wonder Pope Francis

How to be a good pope: gaslighting the faithful
This piece, like all the "good pope" articles, is designed for those who may
one day find a Mafia boss in dark glasses come up to them and say "Congratulations! You're now infallible!
Go out there and make them a doctrine they can't refuse!"
One very necessary skill for a pope is gaslighting, which Wiipedia defines as follow:
Gaslighting is a colloquialism for a specific type of manipulation where the manipulator is successful in having the target (a person or a group of people) question their own reality, memory or perceptions. There is often a power dynamic in gaslighting where the target is vulnerable because they are fearful of losses associated with challenging the manipulator.
Light the gaslight! We have a new pope!
We can give some useful advice here from Pope Francis, seven times voted "Best Pope since Benedict XVI" and one who knows all the tricks.
Suppose that you want to keep the faithful on their toes by causing a schism. That way they can be so busy squabbling amongst themselves
that they won't have time to notice anything dodgy that's going on in the Vatican. At present you have various forms of Mass,
mostly "vernacular", which means that, apart from the usual stuff, you are blessed in that once in a week Fr Radovan Karadžić comes in to offer a mass for the Bosnian Serb community. Also once a month Bishop Lang-Toal permits a traditional Latin Mass at 6 a.m. in a totally inaccessible church.
"Our TLM worshippers are definitely falling off."
So you send out a questionnaire to bishops: Complete the following in less than ten words: "I think the TLM is evil because..." First prize, a cardinal's hat.
Whatever answers you get, you feel justified in saying "Right, chaps, no more TLM unless you get a permit signed in your bishop's blood*."
*Clever, eh? The more reptilian bishops don't have much blood, so they will refuse!
Many people will be angry and blame you for attacking the traditional form of worship (but LGBT Masses and Clown Masses are still permitted, of course).
This is where you turn things round and apply your Holy GasMaster skills. "The traditionalists are schismatic. They are criticising me. ME!!! Am I not Peter?
Where Peter is, the Church is.
If I say (as Peter did) 'I do not know this Man,' should not the faithful agree with me?" So the blame goes onto the trads and you can get your own
way, feeling that you were in the right after all.
The same considerations apply to the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, the Sovereign Order of Malta, and many other nasty groups. You took control of them, they were angry, so
you HAD to take control of them!
You noticed that Albie Boeselager had disgraced himself, so I'm sacking you.
Some gaslighting is more subtle. You accidentally put some heretical statements in your Amorous Letitia Exhortation, and four cardinals
questioned them. Classical gaslighting would involve calling them heretics, blame them for causing a schism, etc. But a true Holy GasMaster will simply
ignore their Dubia, and leave it to his faithful attack poodles to throw the mud. Cardinal Biretta occasionally wears impressive robes - so he is not as
humble as you are! You can make life difficult for him.
A final example: you hold a disastrous Inca Synod, in which you allow the pagan idol PatchyMomma to be celebrated. Your chief attack-poodle,
Austen Ivory-Tower, author of Pope Fred, the New Messiah, immediately decides that this is a representation of the Virgin Mary, and the sub-poodles spread this theory far and wide.
Winner of the "Looks nothing like the Virgin Mary" competition.
However, most people agreed that this was a pagan idol, not welcome anywhere near a Christian service, and a small group even polluted the Tiber by throwing
in several PatchyMommas. Again, as Holy GasMaster you can blame them, getting your historically less-informed poodles to describe the assailants as
"fascists", just as Moses was described when he destroyed the golden calf. You yourself are above such bickering, although you take great
care not to be seen with any other pagan idols. So you win yet again.

The Wind in the Vatican
With apologies to Kenneth Grahame
"Do you know," said the Brand-Moler, blissfully drinking a huge tankard of German beer as he sat in the garden
of the Pope Emeritus. "I've hardly ever been to these
apartments before."
"Really?" said the Ratzinger solemnly. "To my mind there is nothing
at all so worthwhile as messing about in the Vatican."
"What a day I'm having, Ratty," continued the Brand-Moler with a sigh
of full contentment. What's in the picnic basket?"
"Following papal advice, there's Legumes," replied the Ratzinger briefly. "BroadBeansLentilsPeasPeanuts BakedBeansChickpeas MassimoFaggioli PulsesRunnerBeans..."
"Oh stop, stop!" cried the Brand-Moler in ecstasies. "This is too
much! What a feast, Ratty!"
A feast.
Presently Cardinal Raymond Badger entered. He had been visiting
an area
full of mysterious warrens, from which strange little faces
would peep out at intervals to say things like "Hail Pachamama!" "Let's build a bridge towards the weasel community" and "Won't anyone buy my new
book Pope Francis on the Orient Express?"
"You know Toad's got a new Magisterium?" said the Ratzinger to the
Badger once the Brand-Moler had been introduced. "A completely new one. He crashed the one his ancestors handed down to him."
"I know," said the Badger gloomily. "One of these days he'll
get locked up, for sure. I've heard that the Jesuweasels are just
waiting to over-run the Vatican as soon as his back's turned. Then
they'll bring in rainbow flags and Ignatian yoga."
Three cardinals in conclave.
"Why don't you stop him?" asked the Brand-Moler.
"You don't understand," explained the Ratzinger. "Nobody stops Toad.
It always has to be something new. One day it's a change to the Gloria, the next it's a new version of the Lord's prayer."
From somewhere close by came a distant whirring sound, which
gradually rose to a crescendo. Then there was a mighty crash,
and the Toad came flying head-first over the hedge, to land in a
nearby ditch. As the animals hurried over looking very
concerned, the Toad extracted his head from the mud: lying in
the ditch with a contented smile on his face, he sighed and
muttered to himself: "O bliss! Oh my! ...
Amoris Laetitia ... Laudato Si' ... Fratelli Tutti ... Pope-pope! >>> CRASH!!! <<<"

Even Pope Francis can't answer this!
Here is today's brain teaser:
How can one explain to children that - for example - their mother, abandoned by their father and often not willing to establish another marriage bond, receives the Sunday Eucharist with them, while their father, cohabiting or awaiting the declaration of the nullity of the marriage, cannot participate in the Eucharistic table?
Golly, that's a head-scratcher, isn't it?
Why, even Pope Francis can't answer that.
Puzzled!
I put this knotty question to my catechism class ("Let Eccles help you stay saved") and one of my star pupils, Ray Burke (age 6) responded:
"Please, sir! I know. The mother hasn't done anythng wrong, and being a Catholic (we assume) she believes that marriage is for
life; on the other hand the father is living in a sin with no intention of repenting. So he will be unsaved if he takes communion."
Of course the right answer couldn't be that simple, as I told the cheeky boy:
"Raymond! Haven't you read Amoris Laetitia? This supersedes anything you may have seen in the Bible! Look here,
on this page - no, not
that one, it's all about sharing in the household chores, such as power-hosing the television, throwing the cat out of the window, or bathing the hamster.
Anyway, I can't find it at the moment - it may be in a foot-foot-foot-note printed in 2pt type - but I'm fairly sure it
says we mustn't judge people, there is no such thing as good and evil, let us accompany the sinner on his journey of reconciliation. No that doesn't mean
we have to sin as well, Walter! Now, try and be merciful!"
Ray and Walter are very keen children. They wrote a letter to Pope Francis with some questions about
Amoris Laetitia, but the reply must have got lost in the post.
Unfortunately Ray and Walter's letter wasn't included.
In other news, there is hope for Cardinal Zen, as Pope Francis has finally agreed to receive a cardinal from a country with a despotic ruler who encourages massacres of the innocent. No, not China. "You did it, Blase! You got Joe elected! Well done!"

You are old, Father Francis
For those who can't be bothered to wade through what is described - by Dr Austin Powers -
as the most important interview since Scalfarius interviewed Jesus,
we present a poetical version of that interview (with the preliminary remarks such as "Pleased to meet you,
International Man of Mystery!" omitted).
Austen Ivereigh, international Man of Mystery.
"You are old, Father Francis," the small man said,
"You never scold people, or grumble;
Now you live in a cupboard and feed on stale bread —
What made you so awfully humble?"
"In my youth," Father Francis replied to the gnome,
"Dictating was my wish and hope;
I've lived all my life as the saints did in Rome
To get myself chosen as Pope."
"You are old," said the gnome, "and the faithful cry out,
That you're known for your orthodox preaching;
Crystal-clear and profound, ruling out any doubt —
What made you so expert at teaching?"
"In my youth," said the pope, grinning with nonchalance,
"The Jesuits took me in hand;
I learned that no question has just one response —
All answers are equally grand!"
"You are old," said the gnome, "and through synods you sit
Praising dear Pachamama, our queen;
And yet fascists cry out it's against holy writ —
How dare they all say it's obscene?"
"In my youth," said Pope Francis, "I trained as a priest,
And learned that all faiths were the same,
Praising pagan religions, from greatest to least;
So now why should I get the blame?"
"You are old," said the gnome, "and were hardly renowned
For knowing the facts about China;
Yet you've made all their Catholics flee underground —
Could any solution be finer?"
"I have answered three questions, and that is enough,"
Said the pontiff; "don't give me such crap!
Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff?
Be off, or I'll give you a slap!"
(With humble apologies to Lewis Carroll.)
